Making Kubernetes Networking Ready for Service Providers - Philip Klatte, F5, Inc
Service Providers are largely using Kubernetes for their 5G packet cores to deliver the capacity and performance for cutting-edge enterprise and consumer applications and services. But because Kubernetes was not designed for telco protocols or workloads there are networking challenges that must be solved. This talk will describe some of the unique requirements that telco workloads bring to Kubernetes and examine different solutions to address Kubernetes ingress/egress networking and security challenges. Phil will share lessons learned and explore how the different solutions align to Kubernetes design patterns. A similar version of this presentation was given at MPLS SD & AI Net World Congress 2022. The version for Cloud-Native Telco Day North America will be more technical and target people focused on Kubernetes networking architecture and deployment.

Panel Discussion: Moving Towards Environmentally Sustainable Operations with Cloud Native Tools - Moderated by Niki Manoledaki, Weaveworks; Chris Lavery, Weaveworks; Marlow Weston, Intel; William Caban, Red Hat
Power consumption is a large percentage of telco operation costs. We are taking steps to use fewer resources for the same or more compute potential. This benefits both local communities and the telcos paying for these resources, as well as achieving goals around carbon credits, net zero, and other organizational targets or climate-related regulations. We represent a broad range of technologists with expertise in CNF, 5G, Edge, mobile networks, and HPC. We regularly spend time reflecting on the community-driven collective efforts, bringing in new technologies and objectives, including energy-aware workload orchestration, power per watt optimization, energy-aware automation, and GitOps. This panel discusses approaches to identify tactical actions for resource efficiency and what tooling is currently in place to reduce resource consumption. We identify gaps to improve both the tooling for measurement and the ways to manage the resources.

⚡ Lightning Talk: What Are MicroVMs? And Why Should I Care? - Richard Case, SUSE
Have you heard the word “microVMs” and wondered what they are? Or perhaps it's a new term to you? The word itself implies that they are tiny virtual machines but is this true, and what really is microVM technology? MicroVM technology is used by AWS as a core building block for some of its services. So, it's got to be pretty good, right? Are there reasons, as a Service Provider or software vendor, that I should be considering this technology? Can you take advantage of NIC/Hardware acceleration? In this session, you’ll be taken on a tour of what microVMs are, their use cases and some current microVM open-source implementations. You’ll hopefully come away understanding what microVMs are and why they might be useful to you.

Automated Policy-Based Service Assurance in Cloud-Native Environments - Sandeep Sharma, Aarna Networks & Sundar Nadathur, Intel
Application orchestration across multiple Kubernetes clusters is becoming increasingly important, but policy-based service assurance and closed loop automation for applications continues to be a gap in the industry. We have developed an open-source solution to address this gap, using OPA, the popular policy engine, with EMCO, the multi-cluster orchestrator from Linux Foundation. Users can specify an action (and the corresponding actor) that should be taken on the application if certain conditions are met during the lifecycle of the application. The action could be re-configuration of application, scale out/in, migration to another cluster, etc. So, when deploying an application, the user can define declarative intents in EMCO that specify the OPA policy for that application, metrics to collect, the action to take on triggers, and the actor for that action. EMCO automates the policy configuration, metrics collection and policy enforcement. In this talk, you will learn about EMCO, OPA and how they come together for policy-based service assurance.

Integrating Cloud Native Data Plane (CNDP) with OMEC BESS-UPF - Manoj Gopalakrishnan & Elza Mathew, Intel
Cloud Native Data Plane (CNDP) is a set of user space libraries for accelerating packet processing for cloud applications. It aims to provide better performance over standard network socket interface. It uses an I/O layer primarily built on top of AF_XDP; an address family optimized for high performance packet processing. The Open Mobile Evolved Core's (OMEC) UPF project implements a 4G/5G User Plane Function that follows the 3GPP Control and User Plane Separation (CUPS) architecture. This UPF is actively used as part of the Aether platform in conjunction with the SD-Core mobile core control plane. This talk presents the integration of CNDP with OMEC BESS-UPF, which is a software-based data path built on top of the Berkeley Extensible Software Switch (BESS) framework. The traffic flow through the UPF pipeline in a docker environment, the Kubernetes integration with AF_XDP plugins for Kubernetes and the Aether-in-a-box deployment will be covered. In addition, we describe platform technologies for GTP-U packet traffic steering and how this works along with XDP (eXpress Data Path) offload feature in NIC to redirect GTP-U packets directly to user space via AF-XDP.
